Add one more for Dhaulagiri and Annapurna: Colombian Fernando Gonzalez

2004’s K2 summiteer Fernando Gonzalez Rubio has caught the 8000m fever: he wants all 14! After his success on K2, and already boasting two other 8000m peaks on his resume, he is ready for a doubleheader this spring. Fernando is joining the growing number of climbers who have chosen to take on Dhaulagiri and Annapurna.

Joining the crowd

Fernando announced the expedition earlier this week to the local media. He couldn’t provide any further details on his climbing strategy, (such as teammates, logistics, which peak will he attempt first, etc). However, it seems that Fernando may go solo and join up later with a larger international team, as he did last year on K2. Fernando’s climbing buddy, Camilo Gomez, eventually dropped out of that climb. Fernando chose to stick with it, seizing the moment when the weather window finally opened. He summited on July 27, in the second summit wave under the best possible weather conditions.

This year, the Dhaulagiri/Annapurna doubleheader seems to be a fan favorite. The Italian trio (consisting of Nives Meroi, Romano Benet and Luca Vuerich) were the first to announce a Dhaulagiri/Annapurna expedition. Iñaki Ochoa de Olza quickly followed suit. Soon other climbers had joined the ranks, probably sharing the permit. Such was the case for Ecuadorian Ivan Vallejo, German Pete Guggemos, and Fernando himself.

I want to be like Messner

Back home Fernando insisted: “I used no O2 on K2 and I am not going to use it on any of the 8000ers I climb from now on. I plan to return to Everest in 2007 for a no O2 climb. When I summited in 2001 on oxygen, it was too easy. I want to be alone there, like Messner,” he told Diners Magazine.

Fernando González-Rubio, nicknamed “Fercho” by friends, was born in Sta. Marta (Colombia) 36 years ago. Currently he lives in the mountain area of Las Rocas de Suesca. He has climbed Cho Oyu, Everest and K2.
