A break at last for struggling Everest climbers?
image story

"It's the constant and determined effort that breaks down all resistance and sweeps away all obstacles," said Claude M. Bristol.

This morning local time, the winds were reported by several expeditions to have calmed. NZMGA aspirant guide Tshering Bhote and his team, 4 Serbian climbers, and the Norwegian expedition with Jon, Marius, Henrik, Vidar, Mattias and 5 sherpas went for it. If successful, their home teams expected them on the summit Sunday morning local time.

Most of the climbers had already tried, and tried again. But only one summit has been reported to ExWeb so far, and the name has not yet been confirmed.

The jet wind was forecasted to weaken and move away from Everest Sunday, but the conditions were expected to remain breezy, with winds around 15 m/s.

Will the weather hold?

More climbers are now heading up, also on Everest south side for camp 4. According to forecasts, the wind was expected to decrease to 20-25 m/s on Sunday, and to 15-20 m/s later in the period.

WNI wrote a ridge could be lifting the jet to the NE, the wind easing to 10-15 m/s Sunday through the first half of the coming week. It's not the raging 30 m/s we have seen lately, but it's not the usual 5-10 m/s Everest window.

It remains to be seen if the climbers' dogged persistence pays of. It's now or never for them all in the upcoming week. As usual, Everest will decide.
