Abramov's Everest: About inflated costs of rope and runaway yaks
Apr 23, 2004 11: 53 EST
It's cold, it's snowy, the yaks ran off back to BC, there's no toilet in ABC and there was an Expeditions leaders meeting on the North side of Everest yesterday:
Alexander Abramov reports:
"It is probably very warm in Moscow but in ABC it's snowing heavily. Today the members of the team crawled out of the snowing shroud and the snow-covered yaks threw down the load and went back to BC.
We have only pitched five sleeping tents and one kitchen tent right now. We hope to finish the camp tomorrow.
Today there was an expeditions meeting with all the expeditions leaders, the main topic being as usual "who will fix the ropes and who will pay for this work". Last year, the cost was 20$ per climber and this year it will probably be 200$ per climber. Climbing is very expensive. Dima Moskalev is my vice leader and we are discussing the options. He promises to kill me if I don't give up smoking.
I hope the sherps will install the toilet, to you it is funny but when the temperature is -15C and the tears are frozen with the wind…"
The Russian Adventure team has recently been on trips to Elbrus and Ararat, over in Turkey. They also ran a successful Everest expedition last year and are running another trip again this year to the big E. This time, Dave from team ExWeb is with them.
Ludmila "Ludi" Koshelenko, the teams BC chef (who bought aprons and over sleeves for the BC cooks in China) is Yuri Koshelenko's wife, and coming with the team to Base Camp to meet her husband. Yuri is climbing the new route on the Everest North Face with the Russian National team and also joined Babanov in their first ascent of the former highest unclimbed mountain in the world – Nuptse East, 7804m last year.
Says Abramov about this expedition: "For the first time in history of the conquest of Everest the Russian sportsmen plan to cover the expedition on-line. There will be video, shot over to Moscow once weekly over satellite. 8-10 video clips will be aired by the "SPORTS".TV network. Daily dispatches will be published on www.alpindustria.ru and sent to other sites.
