Measuring our tallest mountains is a good deed for science but a nightmare for journalists and mountain climbers.
Chinese lady climbers to set record straight
Makalu, Annapurna, Everest - the heights keep changing with different methods and at one point K2 was even reported the Earth's tallest mountain.
Now China is next to mess things up. In collaboration with the Chinese all female expedition, the country will use GPS and radar to establish if Everest have shrunk some 2 meters due to Global Warming.
The chronology of Everest heights
UK Timesonline made a chronology on the heights of Everest:
1856: 29,000ft exactly. But the surveyor was afraid that it would be regarded as an estimate, so he added a couple of feet to make it sound more authentic.
1953: 29,002ft (8,840m) recorded with Hillary/Tenzing ascent based on the 29,000+ original figure.
1954: 29,028ft (8,848m) Indian survey.
1999: 29,035ft (8,850m) American GPS.
2005: ? Chinese GPS and radar.
