Maps and Compass
|

 |
|
|
The Washburn map is for sale on the streets of
Kathmandu. Bring also a small compass. Use it to take a bearing from C4
to the wall when going for the summit. There are no ropes on this
section and people have been lost on their way down when clouds or night
set in. Much of the tragedy in 1996 could have been avoided if people
had found their way back to C4. Sometimes, strobe light is used by
expeditions on C4 for direction in foul weather on descent. Another
option is the use of a small, handheld GPS unit. Do use some of the
options, and fix ropes wherever possible. |
